Thoughts & Hopes Post Cena vs. Cody – SummerSlam 2025

My Thoughts

Let’s not waste any time and get right into it. I thought the match itself of Cena vs. Cody at SummerSlam was incredible, impactful, just a true classic that will be remembered for years to come.

Was I thrilled with the ending?

No.

I thought the street fight at the biggest event of the summer was the right setup to have “The Final Boss” to get involved. It was the right time for The Rock to dump Cena. It was the right moment for Cody to finally sell his soul to The Rock.

I mean… what have we been building towards? Since King of The Ring, Cody has been progressively acting more and more in a way that a heel does; utilizing an exposed turnbuckle, not hesitating to win a match, forcing Cena to sign the contract. And he teased finally giving his soul to The Rock with wearing things like glasses and watches The Rock would wear. It felt to me like that’s what we were building towards; Cody finally selling his soul.

So when it didn’t happen, I was pissed. I still am a bit if I’m being honest. I’m fine with Cody beating Cena straight up. I’m fine with Cody showing more signs of turning; using the belt or undoing the bottom turnbuckle and striking Cena with it. That’s okay.

Afterall, this match is the so called “passing of the torch”. And speaking of passing the torch, this is the biggest passing of the torch moment since Hogan vs. Rock. Which brings me to my hopes for were the show goes from here.

My Hopes

My hopes now that we are 3 days after SummerSlam is that WWE does what they did with Rock and Hogan where they didn’t turn The Rock heel right then and there at WrestleMania X-8. They turned The Rock heel after. So I hope this Friday night on Smackdown ends with Cody standing tall over Cena, side-by-side with The Final Boss. Maybe even Brock Lesnar is side by side with them after what we saw at SummerSlam.

It’s Cody turning heel after a year and a half battle; winning the title, watching his friends turn on him, losing the title to a fallen version of someone he admired and looked up to in the business (Cena), all he had to go through to beat Cena and get the title back.

I feel that a Cody heel run is needed and needed soon. While he hasn’t necessarily gone stale, I feel that he could soon. There’s isn’t really anything for him to do now that he has beaten Cena. And when factoring everything that has transpired over the last couple years, it just makes sense for Cody to side with The Rock until he inevitably flips back to a face and takes down The Final Boss.

For now we will have to wait and see ahead of this Friday’s Smackdown. I hope you all enjoyed and please feel free to leave a comment and join the conversation.
